I know. It's a busy time for them but I received a card today addressed to someone who lives at the same house number and street as me but unfortunately they live 220 miles in Winchester. I live in Middleton, they live in Littleton. I live in Manchester, they live in Winchester. I live in Lancs, they live in Hants. Wouldn't you think someone at the Southampton or Manchester sorting office might have asked a question or two? They only just missed the letterbox by 220 miles. Don't you just love the Royal Mail?

As a Postman's daughter, I am of course a big fan and have many stories from down the years.

My Dad was thrilled when the Postcodes came in, but still they had great posers to solve - envelopes addressed to 'Auntie Mabel' Nr the butchers shop, Westhoughton for example got through with some detective work.

At this time of year they set a little room aside to rewrap torn parcels and even repair broken toys that had been poorly packaged.
Yes, big fan of Royal Mail here. And if people can't address an item properly (ie use the postcode, they've been around long enough), then they shouldn't complain when items go astray.

Thanks for the replies. I just love the all-knowing, presumptious people on AB. Just to be clear on this;
The envelope was clearly written for an address in Winchester. There was no postcode. Have you recieved any cards/letters without postcodes at all? Ever? If there was no postcode, how did it find it's way to Manchester when it was clearly addressed to Winchester, Hants? For all you lovely, saintly, precious, caring, thoughtful AB'ers, I've already posted it back but had opened it before I noticed the address on the front, so I've put it in a larger envelope, inside it's original envelope. And guess what? I googled the postcode for the address and put that on. I assume it will get to the right address. Your adorable Royal Mail permitting.
From my experience it makes no difference whatsoever if the postcode is on! I frequently get letters for a street with a similar name to mine, but obviously with a different postcode and the postcode is always on ! The lady who lives there, often gets my letters too, but it has happened so many times now, we just readdress and place them back in the post box. Both of us have written several times to the PO complaining with the result that they 'take our complaints very seriously and everything is being done to ensure this never happens again'. But it does !
happened to me recent.. I took the post to the local post office and told them of their errors. At first the lady thought it was the same street as me and went to say something along the lines of "couldn't you pop it round" then she realised it was the other side of the shire.
I have a package here for a house 2 streets away. Postcode is on the package.

I had a package delivered recently and the postman didn't even knock on the door. I have a porch and he/she just opened the door, that I don't mind, but then they opened the second door and left the package in my hall. I'm sitting here on my own, they could be any kinda psycho!
I don't blame you getting 'snippy', Clarion.
If you were in the right clique you'd have got very different replies to the same post. (no pun intended)
I think people have responded as they see it and based on their own experiences good,bad or indifferent - mistakes happen.
I don't mind mistakes and I understand why they'd try the front door, obviously they don't want to be carrying a package round with them for the rest of the day. Just don't open my other door and enter my house.
Santa must have a lot of posts to open. anyone have any idea where he lives...?
ummmm...if you're sat there alone, you really should have the doors locked/not able to be opened from outside. Be grateful it was Royal Mail....it could have been anybody!
