plain cookie recipe HELP!!

could someone please give me a recipe just for plain cookies? also how do you make then so they are chewy and not really crunchy, whenever i make biscuits they always go like cake or really hard! please help!!

Plain biscuits. Mix 8 oz SR flour. pinch of salt 4 oz castor sugar together. Warm (in microwave) 3 oz margarine or butter and 4 oz golden syrup add to dry ingredients Add 1 beaten egg. Place small rounds on a greased baking tray Cook in moderate oven 180 c 350 F gas mark 4 for about 15 mins

just a wee bit of advice if you are going to make them, they spread like mad!! i didnt appreciate what yvonne meant by SMALL rounds!! i ended up with a big square cookie on my first attempt!!!
