set up a user profile a while back but proved to be of no use, Is there a way to remove the option to sign in as a user when the computer starts up? -i.e. i just want it to go straight thru to desktop as it did before

In control panel under users there is a tick box which says something like "Users must enter a username and password" or something like that (Can't remember as haven't used ME for so long) Untick this.
In windows XP if you only have 1 user profile it will just go to that on startup. Not sure if it's the same on ME as i can't remember. You could try deleting all the profiles that you don't want to use and see if that works.
I think you may need to carry out the instuction below given to me back in May when I had a similar problem
go to start - run type in 'control userpasswords2' ( without quotation marks)
untick 'user must enter a username and password to use this computer' restart your system and 'welcome' screen is no more
that's if I understand your problem correctly
