Can anyone please tell me in very simple language how to make a photo I've taken fit suitably for a passport photo? I've saved it in 'My Pictures' on the PC, but when I try to resize it the programme only gives certain image sizes, of which 35mm x 45mm (the size required by the passport agency) is not one.

What program is that? Being able to scale a picture to ANY size you want, is a universal basic feature of graphics programs. I suggest you try a different program.
on the microsoft website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/p
owertoys.asp)
you can download an image resizer plugin where you just right click on a pic and you can resize it. It also has a custom setting so you can choose the size yourself.
