I am thinking of buying a playstation 2 so i looked it up on amazon.com. they said they had an old version (which didn't do anything except play games) and a newer version which plays DVD's/ CD's and games. so when i go to buy the newer version(which plays DVD's) what should i do to make sure that i get the right one.

don't ever recall a lower spec version of ps2. I know some of the early ones had problems with playing dvds, but I don't think games-only ones actually exist.
I agree, all PS2s can play DVD's and CD's (unless they're broken!!)
There are two different types. The original is a larger unit with 4 controller ports. About the same size as a standard stand alone DVD player.

The newer version is much smaller, about the size of a DVD case.

Both do the same things; essentially the newer version just has 2 controller ports.
the old one just has 2 ports too. It's just bigger. The new slimline PS2s have a flip top tray, rather than a sliding one on the original ones.
yes that's true also. thought it had 4 ports, oh well.

areevia: in the end, get whichever you're happier with. the newer one is perhaps better simply because it's a smaller unit.
