I'm stuck(or at least the computer is) on Windows update v.1607 and I can't seem to upgarde to v1709 which is what I want! Is there a way to acquire this update and force it into my system, without doing any damage?
Any suggestions ( constructive) greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Info on why it's refusing might help. Do a google search to see if others have the same issue and have solved it. May require removing installed updates and trying again ?
have you tried running the 'troubleshoot' in windows update?
Do you mean the upgrade fails or it simply won’t instal? Fall Creators is a pretty major upgrade, one it had to be said that had not made my ‘windows experience’ one iota better as far as I can see.
are you sure it's stuck? this is a large update that can take hours ...

Did it download ? Do you have a limited data allowance ?

Thanks to all that have responded so far. I tried running the troubleshooter first-nothing! I'm aware the v1709 upgrade is large and I have actually had it running! It's about a week ago I had an infection? and decided to do a 'Macrium' system restore, which worked perfectly, but has now left me in this current state, running v1607 which was what I created with the 'backup'. I must state that my system is running perfectly(?)it's just that I'm concerned that my system will get 'left-behind' because it's update is from 2016? Regarding the suggestion from OG, I'm afraid that's lost me! So whenever I click on the install updates it tells me that my system was checked already!
Try this - https://venturebeat.com/2017/10/17/how-to-force-windows-10-to-download-the-fall-creators-update/

Maybe completely clearing the Windows/softwaredistribution/download folder first would help.
Checked, but not installed. Weird.
I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will arrive and contribute soon.
As a fall back, and despite expecting flak for suggesting it'd help, I'd be tempted to restore to an even earlier date (or maybe uninstall updates) and retry from scratch.
In fact build 1709 has been replaced by build 1803 so why not go straight to that?

See this web page here, click on the option "Get the Windows 10 April 2018 Update" in the centre of the screen. This will download and install build 1803.

Well this has been a strange do! I used a prog 'Win X Update Assistant' ( from Microsoft)and it did what I think Guilbert53 is suggesting? However I clicked on that and several hours have been spent in the garden watching the grass grow!!!
BUT-it has installed update v.1803 on my system and all of my programs are there and running,so my first exercise was to do a full backup to an external hard drive and then have a beer-thank you all! I must admit that I agree with ichkeria " not made my ‘windows experience’ one iota better as far as I can see." But as I run the whole thing through Classic Shell-configured as Windows 7 ! I'm still a 'happy-bunny'
Cheers all.
In fact there are LOADS of new things in 1803, though not sure how many the "average" person would use.

Here is a list of many of the new things in Windows 10 build 1803

Hi Grandpappy,

Did you stuck in the downloading process on installing process? If you have stuck in the process, maybe you should to check your hard drive space. Before you update the Windows 10 version, there are something maybe you should know about it:

https://windows10skill.com/4-things-windows-update-windows-10/

And if check for updates cannot help you to update it automatically, you can manual download the Windows 10 update files and install it step by step, here is the tutorial:

Wish this can help.
