The only conclusion I can reach is the name meaning.

Baz -Royal; Kingly; Eagle; King; Basil …
Think you have it right, Mamya

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/basil

Apparently the etymology of Basil, hence Baz, is Royal, hence kingly....
A bit tortured even for the Spectator.
Not one I do.
Nor me...far too hard.

Thanks Mamyalynne and ladyalex.
I would never have guessed Baz is Basil.

Another clue answer has Sal for Sarah. New to me.
Knew that one had a Gear Aunt Sarah/Sal to some.
In a barred puzzle the setter will normally only use names and diminutives listed in the 'Some first names' appendix of Chambers, so C gives 'Basil: kingly - dimin Baz' and 'Sarah: princess, queen - dimins Sadie, Sal, Sally'.
