Ok So I Had To Cancel My Holiday Due To My Illness, Should I Pay My Friends Flights?

OK so I had an injury 2 months ago and although I was discharged from my GP, I have recently had new symptoms meaning I have to cancel my holiday in 2 weeks time.
My travel insurance will only pay for my flights, even though I booked for 2 of us on my card. My friend had not bought insurance yet as he was waiting until nearer the time. I felt bad that it was my fault we are having to cancel, and said I would pay his flights back. But now I just realise I can't really afford it, and I just felt guilty that we couldn't now go because of me!
I know I've already said it now, and he said it would be great if he gets the money back from me, but I was kind of hoping that he might say to not pay all of it!
Opinions please on what you think I should do?

He should have got his own insurance
I think if you hadn't said you would then you could have got out of it.....now you have said you would then if you want to stay friends you kind of have to.
Would his insurance even have covered it as he's not the one ill?

How much are the flights? If you can't afford to pay his flight how would you have afforded the holiday?
If you said you’d do it, you should. I presume you had some ‘spending money’ saved up if it’s in 2 weeks time. Could you not use that?
Can your friend find another friend to go with?
Either you have paid for his flight already in which case you don't have to give him anything or he has given you the money so you should give it back.
Yes, I think you should keep your word and pay it now you have told him you will.
I would feel obliged to pay for his flight.
he can still go on the holiday if he wishes
Is he a good enough friend for you to explain that you feel bad about the cancellation but you really can't afford to reimburse him and could he find someone else to go with?
"would be great if he gets the money back from me" as I said earlier - has he paid you the money for his flight? If so of course you should give it back.
can't your friend find A N OTHER to go in your place ? then he/she can pay you for flight...

If the shoe was on the other foot ie he was sick and couldn't go - would you like him to pay for your flight. Just food for thought.
