I am in the process of buying a pedigree cat. i have been giver his pedigree name, and sent photos. I have not yet actually seen him as she is a few hours drive away, but will obviously view before buying.

What I wanted to know is this:

is there anywhere online i can look up this pedigree name and find out if it is in fact a pedigree? Forking out 500 to ind it isnt would be a disaster, so i wanted to see if there is a way of finding out BEFORE I drive all that way to view?

I know to check the papers the breeder ahs for parents and cats names, numbers and colours. other than that I am clueless.

The gccf website will give you an idea of how to find the breeders details. I think they carry adverts or listings of breeders. They may well have their pedigrees on their websites if they have one, this is what most dog breeders do. I would think that if they are on the gccf website you should be fairly safe.
Forgot to say, check with the secretary of the breed club, they will probably know of the breeder, and can tell you if they are a club member and as such have to abide by their code of ethics and club rules. The secretary will be listed on the gccf website.

thank you for your help. i'll start looking
There are some pedigree databases online for certain breeds. I've been looking at one myself, because I have just bought 2 pedigree kittens and had to do my homework before I committed to buying.

Which breed are you getting?
Question Author
bengal.

I went to gccf website, even emailed them and got the answer of "once you buy him you can apply to us for a certificate to authenticate his pedigree from the breeder"

I thought there would have been somewhere you can give his pedigree name and they say "yes he registered".
You can do this with the Kennel Club for dogs. I would try the secretary of the Bengal Cat Club.
This is the lady you want!
Taken from the Bengal Cat Club website:

The Breed Recorder will collate the information on behalf of all Bengal Breed Club members. Send an email to Frances at

Alternatively, give Frances a ring on 01278 452807.

Hope she can help.
