Mamya, that reminds me of a pair of Olympic rowers who won silver. They were in tears saying they'd let everyone down by not getting gold.
To qualify for the Olympics is amazing, to get a medal is even more so. Their families would have been thrilled for them whatever position they'd achieved.

I can understand disappoint in a competitive athlete for sure but to be told you don't count is wrong.

I'm sure they did give their all.
