Of course he should pay more .. I would say about 500 a month would be more like it.

He already thinks he pays too much!!!! I was thinking about 50.00. We are already struggling with a new mortage and have had to start from scratch again. we are paying over the odds as my partner had to buy his ex wife out. I needed to check this out to make sure that I wasnt being unfair.
Thankyou
Just to add my little bit. 500 per week. Ask him to look in the papers to see what he can rent himself eg. spacious room in shared house 80pw inc. So charge him 50 and do nothing for him unless he pays or send him to the laundrette. etc etc. Thats life. The real world will have to head his way at some point. Or do what I do with my ungrateful so ans so's. Buy a box and chuck everything that he has left behind in it. No matter what it is, shoes, rubbish, jumpers. Leave the box in the hall way and when he asked for something tell him to cheack in his box. Hopefully you would have chucked his half finished dinner in there and he'll soon think about doing it agian.
Oh why oh why do people get into this situation in the first place. Are you really such an idiot that you did not see this coming?. It must have been really obvious when you first got together that this would happen and you should have put a stop then. To talk of an income of 500 and a begrudged 20 payment is just ludicrous. Be hard, GET OUT NOW and don`t go back till your `partner` has sorted it after all he let the situation develop.
as a general rule of thumb, people should pay about 1/3 of their net income on housing costs (whether rent or motgage) other extras should be charged piecemeal. You could rememdy the situation this minute by refusing to do other stuff for him NOW
out of interest, what does your partner say about all this?

He tends to go round with his head in the sand. When he was married he used to pay for everything, his wife worked and she kept all her money, if the kids wanted anything he would give it to them, even if he couldnt afford it. Thing is I have told him that kids cant have everything they want, and they have to learn the rules of life. I have mentioned it umpteen times - I have also told his son in front of his Dad that he should be paying more, but his son either ignores me or tells me to go somewhere!!!!!!
