Coming towards the end of our 30 years in North Lancashire, we decided to visit Chester, never been there. Set satnav for hour and forty minute journey, no problems. Great day in Chester, left at 5pm, put home into satnav. Somehow, must have touched avoid motorways icon. Now bear in mind I do not know this area at all. Presumed satnav had found a quicker way home and stupidly followed the directions.Realised the seriousness of the situation when we arrived at the Mersey tunnel. Anyway the journey was one mile less than than the outbound but took over three hours. Thrilled to get on the M6 at Haydock. Never thought I would say I love motorways.

Always set 'Fastest Time' and not 'Shortest Route' ;)

Geevo, twice I've nearly fallen asleep trying to read the instructions.
Going to have another go tomorrow.
Well that's what motorways are for sapel. But one could be forgiven to think otherwise these days with the permanent occurrences of miles & miles long roadworks, and chunks of motorway shut down regularly. The quality of the surface ain't as good as they used to be either. Dips & bumps and an inability to clear rainwater in places.
About sat navs, it's a pity there seems no way to easily feed back errors one finds. :-(
I find speed limits shown that are incorrect, roads named incorrectly, and a veer left that is referred to as straight on.

Just a quick word to express my appreciation for all the suggestions as to the satnav settings.
Mine once insisted on me joining a motorway toll road. I eventually abandoned my journey and went home as I couldn't work out how to override it. I took it back into the dealers the next day and they deleted the 'Toll road' option.
I think sometimes I should have a paper atlas in the car as well when I in a strange area.
Very helpful comments on this post about using the satnav. Thank you.
