Emmie, every clue should have a definition which is usually the first or last word.Decide which it is and work from there.
Since when was wool a synonym for cotton?
Not sure Jack, but I have seen cotton defined as a fine type of wool.
Jalousie I see but cotton not at all, also don't see the relevance of 'wool' nor 'on with'
Prudie, cotton on is to realise(get) something. On is in the clue.I don't like the clue but it parses.
Yes the definition of cotton on meaning to get is clear - but has little to do with the clue and if we weren't told it started with C then I don't think cotton would be found as the answer for some while.
Cotton on means with in the sense of being aware. However, as wool comes from sheep or other similar animals and cotton comes from a plant I don't see the connection.
I think the setter has had an off day.
