I thought it was Cher
Oooh or maybe Diana Ross
Question Author
And there you have the problem. We put Cher, the guy had Diana Ross on the basis that her 1999 top ten hit at Christmas(some forgetable song that I would only recognise if I heard it) went into 2000!!.Oh well
Cher's 4th decade UK Top 10 hit was in April 1991.
(Her 5th decade hit was November 2001).

Cher UK Top 10s to date:

#9 All I Really Want To Do Aug '65
#3 Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) Mar '66
#4 Gypsies Tramps And Thieves Nov '71
#5 I Found Someone Dec '87
#6 If I Could Turn Back Time Sep '89
#1 The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) Apr '91
#10 Love And Understanding Jul '91
#7 One By One Jan '96
#1 Believe Oct '98
#5 Strong Enough Mar '99
#8 The Music's No Good Without You Nov 2001
Oh I thought you said numbers ones was gonna say
Im still Waiting 1971
Chain Reaction 1986
Then with westlife last year but I cant think what she got to number one with in the 90s

But if its 10 ton hits yer definately my first answer Cher :-) and another bit of useless information BeeGess are the band to have 4 numbers ones in 4 consecutive decade.
4getmenot, I'm not sure about your Bee Gees fact, I think their highest UK chart single in the 1990s was For Whom the Bell Tolls, which got to number 4 in Nov 1993. They've only has number ones in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Question Author
While we are on the subject are Blondie the only group who have a chance to have a number one in 4 consecutive decades?
Not quite, dr pop. Technically Queen could still have a number one, which would mean they'd have done it. Also, if U2 get another one in 2010 or after, they'll have done it.

Of course if Cliff Richard gets one this decade, he'll have had number ones in SIX consecutive decades!

Now that you mention it robbo82, have Queen not already done so.Bo Rap in 70`s,Under Pressure in the 80`s, several in the 90`s and We will rock you in 2000?
Of course the question master at the quiz last night would say the 80`s and 2000 ones don`t count because they were with other people!!!!!!!!!(sorry - lost my composure there)
Oh yes, I'd tried to erase the travesty of Queen/Five's We Will Rock You from my mind.
Question Author
While we are on 4getmenot Diana Ross and Westlife`s version of Ross`s When you tell me that you love me only got to number 2.
This was due to my 40 night vigil, going without food and water, and praying to the highest power that I could(cue rapturous applause from the rest of a grateful nation)
The same song had been her highest chart position of the 90`s again peaking at number 2
Oh yer I thought it was xmas number 1 but that was X Factor *****
January 2000 was still the 20th Century, the 21st Century did not start until January 1st 2001so that argument about Diana Ross doesn't hold up.
spudqueen - whether or not the year 2000 was in the 21st Century it was still the start of the noughties.

A decade is any 10 year period and is often used to encompass specific sets of 10 years e.g. 60s for 1960-1969; 70s for 1970-1979; etc.

'Decades' and 'Centuries' are not necessarily contemporaneous. Thus the end of the 90s did not signify the end of the 20th Century.
