there is a book? i thought they were just making it up as they went along!

could you be thinking of lord of the flies by william golding (party of school children crash land on a desert island and make a new society)
Question Author
I've been told by quite a few people now that the idea is from a book. Not sure how much they are following it, and making their own stuff up, but i'm pretty sure there is. Unless of course everyone is talking about the Lord of the flies and dont realise!!
They have featured "The Third Policeman" in the show, leading some to speculate that there is a tie-in. There are also some novelisations (I think they are "original stories" rather than script adaptations) and a (forthcoming?) novel that is puportedly the manuscript that Sawyer found and was reading.

99% sure that the series isn't directly based on a book though.
I'm not aware that the series is "based" on a book.
It may be that the producers/writers were "inspired" by a book.

I'm pretty sure if it was based on a book, there would be a credit to that effect at the end of the show.
After reading Lord Of The Flies, I have found loads of similarities. Like the group splitting up to go to the caves while the others stay on the beach.
There is not one book on which the series is based. However, you might be talking about 'Bad Twin', which is kind of a side story to the series: the author 'Gary Troup' supposedly delivered the manuscript for this hotly anticipated thriller, just days before he boarded Oceanic Flight 815. Haven't read it myself but many Lost fans I know just can't stop talking about it. It was released a couple of months ago I think.
My bad, maybe you should check this out:
