Could it be a tenuous link to Bertie Bassett?

I think it short for Bertie Smalls the original Supergrass.
Jack Slipper the investigating oficer into the Great Train Robbery was responsible for Britain's first "Supergrass" trial in 1973, in which bank robber Bertie Smalls testified against his former associates in exchange for his own freedom.
So anyone who snitches is doing a Bertie.
