I have been wondering this for years. You know in shops, when you bought something heavy, at the till they might say ooo that’s a bit heavy, let me double bag it for you......well would it actually make any difference? I can see that spreading the load over four handles instead of two would help to stop the handles breaking, but the actual bags are unconnected at the carrying end...so would it help to stop the bag bursting or is it just one of those beliefs that have no basis in fact.....and is it different for sharp pointy loads which would pierce the bags and for blunt loads which would burst through by reason of weight?

The guy who wrote this has a PhD in mathematical physics:

In more depth, breaking occurs when the material's capacity for inelastic strain is exceeded. With two bags, you average out individual weaknesses and provide reinforcing. Plastic is also quite sticky when under strain, which would help to spread forces through the structure.

I`
I`m more inclined to think its because modern bags are so flimsy to cut costs that you need 2 to hold anything significant.

So that would be a “yes” then ZM?
If it was that heavy I would handle it.

sorry TWR I have no idea what you mean by that
Morning, If an Item was that heavy I would not trust a plastic bag, I would carry it or use my own bag.
They offer to double bag 6 bottles of wine or a large turkey.
So if your shopping was 6 bottles of wine, a turkey and 8 cans of beans I would love to see you carry that!!!!
I would USE my own bag.
Instead of double-bagging the whole lot, I'd have thought it would make more sense to put half the the load in each of two bags.
Double bagging at 5p each? I'll take my chances thank you. :P
