Its a disease that is carried by and transfered by water. So if you went swimming in a lake which contained a water borne disease then you could catch it. Colds for example are air borne in that they are carried in the air.

mostly by drinking or inhaling (legionaires) the water, though some (weils) can be transmitted through skin contact.

Waterborne diseases are pathogenic micro-organisms which are directly transmitted when contaminated drinking water is consumed. It can be caused by protozoa, viruses, bacteria, and intestinal parasites intestinal parasites.
