I've recently noticed a bird that's about the size of a pigeon, but with a reddish coloured chest and black/dark brown wings and back. Could anyone tell me what this is?

it isnt a wood pigeon, is it?

I don't think so. Aren't these mainly grey. I've just had a look at the rspb website. The colours of this bird I've seen are much darker and richer.
A Wood Pigeon is a very large bird Natalie measuring 40-42cms. There isn't anything in that size range that would fit your description. Have a look at these: Redwing, male Sparrowhawk, male Redstart, Song Thrush and Mistle Thrush - all considerably smaller, but at least it's a start.

A bit more info would be helpful. On the ground did it run or hop? What food did it eat? Was it happy or wary if other birds were present?

probably a Jay, qv
i am thinking it could be a turtle dove http://www.rspb.co.uk/birds/guide/t/turtledove/ind
