Is this within walking distance or do I need to take some form of transport? What options are available?

Both the National Rail station and the Underground station are part of the main Heathrow Airport complex. (i.e. you can walk to them).

If you've purchased cross-London rail tickets from another part of the country, these will include the Heathrow Express trains. If not, you need to be aware of the big fare differences which apply to the different operators:

Heathrow Express charge 14.50 single and 27 return for the 15 minute journey to/from Paddington. (Trains run every 15 minutes).

Heathrow Connect charge 9.50 single to/from Paddington. (Their trains run every 30 minutes and have a longer journey time because they call at a few intermediate stations).

London Underground trains take the longest to/from central London but they run frequently and charge just 4 for the single journey.

If you go for the tube option just be aware that there are a lot of engineering works going on at the moment. Came back from holiday on 3rd June to find had to get off tube and take bus for part of journey before re-starting tube journey. Luckily, South African Airways had failed to check my luggage through, as would not wanted to have lugged it on and off the bus!
