I can't remember how to add fractions together. I was trying to figure out if my husband ate half the pie and I ate a third of the pie, how big would the remaining piece be, ie. one eighth, one tenth etc. Can anyone explain how I could have worked this out? Thanks.

You have to change the fractions until you are comparing like with like - change them until the bottom bit (whatever it should be called) is the same. In your case make them both into sixths. The bottom bits of your fractions are 2 and 3. The lowest common denominator is 2 x 3, or 6.
Multiply the first fraction by 3 (top and bottom) so 1/2 becomes 3/6. Multiply the second by 2, so 1/3 becomes 2/6. Now you can add them together, 3/6 + 2/6. I'll leave you to take it from there!
top bit = numerator, bottom bit = denominator (oh pedantic me!)
