Motor-Cycle Crash Helmets (Religious Exemption) Act 1976 passed by the British Parliament in 1976, Section 2A "exempts any follower of the Sikh religion while he is wearing a turban" from having to wear a crash helmet.

Probably. I'm sure the law came out in the 60s and Sikhs were exempted later.

I remember it well. In 1973 it became illegal to ride a motorbike without a helmet. There were many protest rallies in the months leading up to and after the change in law

Squadron Leader Mahinder Singh Pujji DFC refused to wear protective headgear and wore his turban which he claimed saved his life when he shot down at least twice during WWII. A lot of Sikh fighter pilots wore their turbans when on active service.
