Hope someone can help

The other evening whilst driving at circa 15 mph, i tried to change gear from 3rd to 2nd, whereupon there was a snap and the clutch pedal lost all resistance and just pushed easily and uselessly back and forth, leaving me unable to change gear

the AA reckoned all was fine with the clutch system and, having found some bits of plastic and a spring on the floor, reckoned that the pedal had come detached from the clutch system. He then simply used a clip to hold the pedal in place and off I went again

Upon taking the car to the garage, I have been told that the clutch master cylinder needs replacing at a cost of circa 300. Does this sound right? (car is 3 yrs old and has done 30000 miles; no previous clutch problems and none experienced once pedal re-attached )

Any and all help appreciated

The AA may have made a temporary repair. It could last for ages or may go tomorrow. 300 quid sounds a bit excessive though as the labour time is only 1 hour and the part can be bought for about 30.00 so should be max 100.00. If this is from a Ford Dealer then go to an independant garage they will be cheaper.

The pedal link has a plastic ratchet arrangement which can cause problems - the plastic teeth strip and break off causing the symptoms you describe. It an awkward think to replace but is not an expensive part. Looks as if the garage you went to are just looking for a good earner off your car. Go to a recommended local garage or ask a mechanic to do it for you as a private job.
