"Try ... 'um uh' "

Yes but "um uh" when written sounds like "uh, I'm not sure", not the smiling endorsement it plainly was. Saying that she didn't mention Putin by name is a hopeless cop out. She didn't need to.

Andrew Neil needed to or else Putin would not have been mentioned.
The way you, mikey and the media are portraying it you would think she voluntarily started waxing lyrical about Putin.
If James is just another 'nobody' from the 'irrelevant' party, why,as usual, are certain people getting so bloody hung up about what she means by 'commitment' in this case?

The article that Mikey originally posted is a perfectly accurate report on what Diane James said, both a year ago and confirmed in her Sunday Politics interview.
That original interview shows a worrying affection for the sort of perverted 'nationalism' that many have compared to Hitler's behaviour pre 1939.
She celebrates the fact that he is 'very nationalist' and his supposed concern for Russian people in Ukraine, which was a load of old hokum. In general, I'd say, as I said about 95 posts ago, that it's probably just ignorance than actual support.
She seems quite happy with it, but you can feel the embarrassment here :-)
Hence the stuff about 'commitment' which wasn't her word. She didn't feel the need to prevaricate. That might come later if she was educated in what she was talking about
@ Ichkeria

Well, we shall see if prospective supporters are much bothered by her comments. Meanwhile, some more welcome news for Mikey:-

"UKIP has achieved huge success in Wales this year and we also should not ignore the overwhelming support that Brexit had in the principality.
"I want to see this success and support built upon going forward and hence my meetings with the members will be the first step towards this goal.

"Wales should be a blueprint for UKIP electoral success - it is my intention to make it so."

No it isn't.
Give me a link to Diane James saying on BBC1’s Sunday Politics

''I place the Russian president in my top three''

This is surreal.
^ just another weird and wonderful day chez AB!
