I sometimes get unwanted calls on my smartphone like PPI, Accident Claims etc. Sure I'm not the only one! Well, a friend told me to download a programme called Truecaller which will hopefully stop these nuisance calls. I was unconvinced this would help but I was wrong. On Friday my phone started ringing & on the display it came up with the info "scam call from Alexandria, Egypt". I obviously didn't answer. Just thought I would share this for those also troubled by these calls. It is free too.

I want one for my land line line - I've taken over a phone from a friend who has lived in the cottage for a thousand years - for various reason reasons the number remains registered to her - I am innundated with scam calls - I now have caller dispay but still have to get up and check when the phone rings - driving me nuts1
Invest in one of these: BT8600 phones, £43 from Amazon. They are rather complicated to set up (I'm only half-way through my new one). They are great. If you block a call or type of call, such as International, Unavailable etc. as well as individual numbers, the phone doesn't even ring, it just politely tells the caller to sod off.
Google BT8600 for further info. Seems they are now £51 on Amazon since I bought mine four weeks ago.
Ooh I'm alwYs getting these blooming calls!!
I use an app called safest call blocker for the mobile. Usually with nuisance calls it will only ring for a few rings. I then search the number and if dodgy just block the number. Simple and it works.

They still call on similar numbers, but only the once.
thank you for the link 'thelewisgang' - will check it out tomorrow.
jackdaw 33 I have to admit to being a bit peeved about paying for a land line then having to pay again to block calls to that land line -the £50 odd is not the issue it's that I think for the vast profit BT makes it should have a system in place to block these calls.
This really is a marvellous piece of kit. I have blocked all International and Unavailable numbers. Withheld numbers I allow because they may be routed through a switchboard such as the local surgery. If it is spam I merely press a button and block it. With unknown numbers, those which are not in your phone address book, you have choices; you can allow (let them come through), block them all (not advisable) or announce. With the last the caller has to state his name. The phone will then ring and say, "You have a call from Fred" . You can then take the call, send it to the answerphone or block the number.
The £50 odd is the price of the phone, not a fee to BT. I needed a new phone anyway.
Thank you for the very clear info Jackdaw33 - will check it out as I maybe could do with a new phone anyway. Stay well
I too have a call blocking BT phones. The caller has to announce the call, and you have the option to decline or accept. One caller said it was a personal call when it wasn't. I had great pleasure in calling them as liars and subsequently blocking it.
The mrnumber app is good for mobiles. I also have a Gigaset house phone with built in nuisance blocker which is great. I don't answer any number that I don't recognise, then google it and if it's a scam number I block it, job done!
