Early windows operating systems to be exact (for nostalgia purposes) - version 1.0 or 2.0 - anyone know where i can download either or both of these? I'm also (perhaps naively?) assuming i can run them under windows 2000 as they weren't really an operating system at this stage, and will run in a 16bit NTVDM? ps. Googled without success

I'm not too sure where you could get them on the internet... but you should try computer fairs and car boot sales etc. You will not, however, be cable to run them under windows 2000. because they ran ontop of msdos (which is not included in windows 2000, only an emulation of msdos is) they could not be run from within windows. you can, however, get hold of a piece of software called VMWare (or a simaler product) which allows you to use a virtual machine from within windows to install operating systems etc onto virtual systems.

errr.... yes i can - windows pre 3.1 was not an operating system moreover it was merely an application which sat on top of DOS (as you correctly say) - Windows2000 (well, all windows operating systems after 3.1 really) runs a NTVDM - a NT virtual dos machine which is basically a 16bit subsystem running under the 32 bit operating system. My only concern in this case was that the very early DOS O/S and windows applications were 12 bit and i wasn't sure whether NTVDM would handle this
