Many thanks Neveracrossword for a quick response.
You're welcome, souxie - I'd done this crossword at lunchtime, that's why my answers came so quickly!
Can someone explain TONSIL for 5d please !
Struggle - Toil around (N)o(S)h
Struggle = TOIL + NS = odd bits of NoSh
Thanks, but I have trouble with that.

I have always been led to believe that in a cryptic clue, the word should be defined in the first or last word of the clue, and I can't see that its defined by struggle or painful.
Or have the rules changed ?
"is this painful?" appears to be the definition, which is poor because most of the time they aren't.
Isn't the definition 'is this painful'? I think convention says it (a definition)comes at the beginning or end of a clue - but I don't think a definition has to be only a single word.
Glad you agree Mamy !
'it is' painful may have made more sense - becoming Tonsil it is
I still thinks its poor. Many millions of people have tonsils, and they aren't painful at all.

( not me though, as mine came out when I was about 3 years old ! )
I think you should avoid this crossword, Mikey - there are at least half a dozen answers where the definition is not the last word (nor indeed the first word).
Then Mr PHI is a very, very naughty boy !
Mikey, and so are the setters of the Times Jumbo and the Times Cryptic crosswords! I still think you have misinterpreted the convention. The definition should come at the beginning or the end - but, to me, that's as far as it goes! Your 'first or last word' is a bit too rigid, I feel.
Never....Its what I was always told about cryptics, by people on here, but I guess it doesn't apply these days.
Thanks Jeff...I shall add that to my "Crossword favourites" folder !
