Hi,

Have had 2 quotes to get my [small] garden, well, "redesigned" I guess (2 of the 4 guys who visited have never bothered quoting, so much for Checkatrade !), & I'm (& friends I've mentioned it to) astounded at the cost !

The garden's approx. 11.3m long x 6.2m wide with a 3m conservatory jutting into that space. The garden needs to be removed of all shrubs, turf & paving & replaced with a weed membrane, 13m² artificial turf (middle of the range at around £21 per m²), 47m² sandstone paving (going round the conservatory too), & not-to-wide borders round the edges, just bark / stone chippings. I realise I'll need a digger of some description (which probably will need a fence panel removing to get it in) & a skip. Not looking for a quote obviously, just a ballpark figure ? Even to the nearest £1000 ! In Berkshire.

Cheers

About two years ago we had our garden completely gutted and turned into an allotment for Mr BD, Garden about 40ft x 60 ft. Completely dug out by two brothers who worked their backsides off. All by hand, no diggers. They laid a 12ft square of paving stones to one side which now houses the greenhouse, the wormery and the compost bins. The full width of the garden at the back is one large raised bed for just herbs. There are two raised beds each 18ft x 6ft and one raised bed 8ft x 12ft for all sorts of vegetables. The space left was covered with a membrane and then fine pea sized pebbles all over. The raised beds are made of the concrete slabs that you get at the base of fences. They slot on top of each other and will last forever. Total cost was £3,900. Well worth it and I always know where he is. Manchester area.

Looks like your garden's more than twice the size of mine - going by the fence panels mine's only about 34' x 18' - & sounds like you had a lot more work done ! The more I think about this, the 2 quotes I've had, around £5600, are WILD !
Artificial turf....the complete supply and fit, is around £60m2

I think your quote....which obviously require some heavy-ish plant, is reasonable
that is a reasonable price for what you need doing...unless you do it yourself..and have plenty of time..get them in....I was quoted 8k ten years ago and that was just to clear the ground..fence and do a bot of slabbing...no planting no chips / stones etc..and if I were you I would rethink artificial turf..looks good ..to start......

WOW ! It really is a small garden. But then if it's over £500 to fit a 14m strip of artificial turf costing around £300 ... again, I say - WOW ! & I take your point, murraymints, but it won't get much wear - just the cat walking over it :)

The guy who quoted now can't do it for several weeks so gonna try doing some / most of the groundwork myself.
Contact your local colleges and check if they do courses in gardening/landscaping and see if any of their students want some weekend work. Our grandsons's best friend is studying on one of these courses and is grateful for the experience and the extra cash. They are now comiing up to their summer holidays. Just a thought

Might try that BAKERS DOZEN, thanks. It doesn't have to be *perfect* I guess, & I don't mind organising skip etc. Basically I just want it tidied, minimal (ie. no, haha) maintenance & the weeds GONE ! ;)
