...I've been a member since 1994 and have paid by monthly direct debit currently £18.75, thats £225 a year. I made a phonecall to complain, Green Flag could offer a very similar coverage for £53.50 a year.

AA won't price match but I was offered same cover for £89 for the next 12 months, preserving my Gold Membership Status

I know it's £35.50 a year more than Green Flag but its a shedload less than £225, I'll stay with the AA....What do you think

Not allowed to wait too long on the motorway for your breakdown service to arrive. If they can't or won't turn up in a reasonable time the highway agencies will get you towed and charge you around £200

I get all those services for around £50 and get to use my Tesco vouchers on something else.

The AA and the RAC both have their own patrols, who try to fix your car at the roadside before considering anything else. Other companies, such as Green Flag and Autonational Rescue use local contractors, who're far more likely to turn up with just a tow truck to get you to their garage (or, if you've got 'relay' cover, to your destination, still with your broken-down car).

I'm not knocking Green Flag, Autonational Rescue, etc. (I was with Autonational Rescue for years). However comparing their services to those of the AA and RAC can never be on a true 'like for like' basis.

I'm currently with the RAC because I get a good deal with them through Post Office Insurance.

They would have to be exceptional under those circumstances I would suggest.

Sorry not to be here last night but I've only ever had to use their services twice and both times back in the 1990s. I've had three cars in the last 7 years and they have all been from new. My current car is 6 months old. So yes I agree I have been unnecessarily been paying money for no good reason for years.

Like you janzman, I stick with the AA and my gold memebrship, and rarely use it, touch wood. But I do ring them now at renewal time and tell them that I am considering switching to another provider and they retain the price. Your £89 is a good price, do what I do next year and don't let it get above £100.
