lol this this so funny and surprisingly hard to do. You've got to say the alphabet, but after each letter you've got to say "to the"
ie, a to the b to the c to the d
have a go and tell me how far you got before messing up

True.
Just done it. You have to concentrate quite a lot, but no problem to complete the alphabet - and this is after wine and a decent G & T.! (or 2, t.b.h.)
Be honest now, did you have the alphabet in front of you?
We had the Yogh, which was the character that was replaced by z in names such as Menzies.
Thorn still exists in Icelandic, though it is a different shape. It is used to distinguish between the two pronunciations of 'th'. Welsh does something similar; 'th' represents the 'th' in path whilst 'dd' represents the sound of 'th' in them.
Nope, CORBY, but I've been well-rehearsed lately. I've gone in as a volunteer reading assistant at our local secondary school since April, and of the 7 pupils I aid (they are doing very well) I discovered that 5 did not know their alphabets (Yr. 8) so I've been teaching it to them and chanting away every week. It has overcome the vino....:)

@ tony, lol not really, i think it's just made me laugh even more at myself. hopefully i've put a smile on some other peoples faces too
Funnily enough, I have a degree in Russian yet cannot recite the alphabet. It has never been a problem as I have a good idea of the position of each letter in the dictionary.
You sing it, jackdaw.... wish there were an audio facility. :(
Jackdaw or any other clever person,

Do you know what this character is or called called at the top of this sign.

I see it sometimes in Abobe Illustrator, but haven't a clue what it is.
All I can remember is: А Б В Г Дейка.
Gromit, is it not just a representation of a bulb of garlic?

@ jack daw, that's so interesting, the human brain works in strange ways sometimes. Not to be rude but are you dyslexic at all? i am and i am starting to wonder if that's why i found it so hard, i also have such a big problem with left and right, but i'm fine learning new things
Sorry, but in no way am I dyslexic. To tell the truth, at the beginning I was told I did not need to learn it off by heart as long as I knew roughly the alphabetical order, so I didn't.
Jackdaw, it is on the sign, but it exists as a font character in many typefaces. I think its original use must be something else.
Question Author
thats such a good point.... what use is knowing the order of the alphabet any way? it's probably just a way to start getting children to learn
Jackdaw,
The funny symbol seems to be just a wingding decoration

Yes, so no special significance, then.
I have seen it described as "leaf south east" and its orientation varies.
