To guide him to his destination in Scotland, a radio beam was transmitted from a base in northern France, His receiver was designed to lock on to the beam and he could then fly along it. However it didn't work entirely because crash landed in central Scotland miles from his destination

HogF, I'm guessing here, but from what I know of the navigation aids of the time, I think "lock on" is a bit of an exaggeration. He would have had some indication of which side of the beam he was on, but it would be up to him to interpret it and correct his track. One such aid broadcast Morse As (dot-dash) on one side and Ns (dash-dot) on the other. When in the middle you would hear a continuous note. Hess was more a politician than a pilot, and I guess hie skill just wasn't good enough to use the navigation beam any better.
