Statins are not expensive. You can buy a 6 month course of high dose over the counter for £60. The cost to the NHS is much less so there is no profit for the drug companies in paying GPs to prescribe them.
Here's an interesting article by a vascular surgeon who stopped taking statins. In it he mentions research studies that have concluded that women do not benefit from cholesterol lowering drugs...infact women *need* cholestrol. The lower a woman's cholestrol, the greater the risk of dying from heart disease...or any other disease.

I say let her eat cream and full fat milk. Who needs statins?

People like me who have suffered mini strokes/strokes.

I did not want to start arguments about statins - I know what I think - same as sqad. Anyway, the Doc did not tell her what they were for, but when she got the tablets I knew straight away, and explained to her. My mother rang the surgery and asked what her cholesterol level was, 5.9. My god I thought, if my cholesterol level is that at 92 I would think I was ok, not too worried. She has looked at the side effects, re: aches and pains and upset bowels, she says she's enough aches and pains at 92 without taking these things. She wioll do what she wants!
