We're trying desperately to remember a book we used to read to our son who is now 38. I'm pretty sure it would have been a ladybird book but I may be wrong. Anyway, it was about a penguin who bunked off school and spent the day picking peas. I have TRIED googling it, but to no avail.

Peyton Penguin Prefers Peas?
If brainiac is correct, I've looked it up on abebooks and it's extremely expensive to buy, for no apparent reason.
However, amazon have it on a kindle version for 99p!
Sorry, Eddie, your answer wasn't there when I wrote that!

Thank you, but I'm sure that's not it. It must be about 40 years old now. That picture doesn't seem familiar. Also it was a small hardback book (like a ladybird book).
You're right, horseshoes. I can see it now (in my memory). Will try and do some research and see if I can find it.
The First Day of the Holidays!!
The Amazon one is a new edition in a modern cover.

Hellywelly, that's it!!!! How did you find it? I've spent all bloomin' night putting possibilities into google. Thanks SO very much. Thanks to you all.
www.easyontheeye>ladybird I think. I'm on my iPad and don't know how to copy and paste the link. It's a list of titles. I used to read them when I was little (in the 40s) and then read them to my children in the early 70s, so remember them quite well.

Brilliant Hellywelly. Our son's favourites were Three Billy Goats Gruff, Smoke and Fluff and this First Day of the Holidays. I preferred Enid Blyton when I was little in the late 50s early 60s; Tales at Teatime, Tales By the Fireside etc etc. and then Secret Seven. Funny thing is, despite EVERY encouragement, son never became a reader:-(

Thanks Chris;-)
I remember a book called 'The first day of the holidays' but I don't think it had a penguin in it.

Eddie, it was about a very naughty penguin who hid his bike, bunked off school and went to pick peas!! Ha ha my son LOVED it:-)
