My computer has become infested with pop-up advertisements. I am fairly new to computers, and although I see that there are 'pop-up advertisement blockers' I am uncertain of which to have or what to do. All advice will be much appreciated.

As Google is the preferred search engine for most people why not download the Google Toolbar? It's easy to use and includes a pop -up stopper - but you must turn it off before asking a question on this site as it somehow interferes with posting.
Sounds like you have adware installed on your computer. Download the latest version of Ad-aware from http://www.ad-aware.com or Spybot S&D from http://www.security.kolla.de - they'll spot the programs that are causing this and remove them for you. And they're both free.
another good site is NoAds i use it & have had no problems, easy to use & free.

Thank you all very much. My primary problem is that whenever I go to the internet something called res://mshp.dll/index.html#37049 grabs the address bar and I cannot get rid of it (I've cleared temporary files, cookies, history etc and disc cleaned three or four times, but whenever I set "Use current" or "Use blank" this blessed thing takes over and the screen becomes a shopping page with the addressas I have given). Will the remedies each of you have kindly given stop this?Is there something else that I should do?
