What is the small box called that is found on top of the CH pump I believe it regulates the heating between DWH and CH. Ours is a Myson. Also where can I find an instruction booklet from, if such a thing exists

It's called a pump switch or pump controller. It should work automatically. What's the problem?
Could be a diverter valve anything like this ?

That's it emeritus. Have just had it replaced last week and it was still under warranty. The CH kept switching off and the plumber said that when the water reached the correct temperature it was switching the heating off
and told me that while I was waiting for a replacement - 3 weeks - to alter the timing of the hot water and this appeared to work.So the new box was replaced, but on Xmas day the heating switched off and nothing I could do would restart it - cold day and with guests. On Boxing day the same thing happened and my OH who claims to know nothing about the heating went upstairs and moved the lever on the box over and back and the heating started up - he used to drive steam engines and says it is the same principle!! We have never touched the box before as know nothing about them so thought t was about time I did.
Sounds like it's a diverter valve, Kazal. I can't find any instructions on the Myson site. It's possible there isn't one. Diverter valves are fairly simple.

What do you need to know?
Sorry, slow typing there. ^^^

It has a manual operating lever. If it's faulty, then simply select either HW or CH manually

Yes The Builder I have just looked at the link that emeritus sent and it doesn't tell me anything. The point is I have never tampered with this diverter before as I know nothing about them and I assumed they go on working until they break. Should we be aware etc. that we can move the lever or has something gone wrong with this one?
Question Author
The Builder I wrote this before I saw your next bit. Are you suggesting that this one could also be faulty?
It should do its job automatically. Yes, it may be faulty, but it may be the wiring or the boiler control that's gone wrong.

The programmer in the boiler should send a signal to the valve to change to either HW or CH as necessary.

Probably the only thing you could try is to check the wiring for loose connections. The valve may be OK, but it's just not getting the message from the boiler.

It's a nuisance having to operate manually, but at least you will have some control until it's looked at.
you can buy new part separately from sole heat. Media URL: http://soleheat.co.uk/
