recycling bin thingys

Can you just place non recyclable products straight into he big grey bins or do they have to go into bin bags first?

Certainly in our area we can put things straight into the bins, but it makes the bin stay smelling much sweeter if it's put in bags. We've lost many a good neighbour who fell in headfirst trying to clean the bottom of the bins :-)
