Apologies for the homework question, but I'm really stuck. Does anyone know of any artist who draws/paints people holding or wearing masks? All I've found so far are the masks themselves.

Thanks in advance.

Dave McKean? Though as most of the examples I know of are from his film "MirrorMask", I'm not sure that he counts. There's a couple of examples here: http://www.bulletsofautumn.com/mckean-art/mirrormask.html and you'll probably find more if you Google. There's a load of books on the film, which is on R1 DVD already and R2 in June.

check out the Renaissance harlequin paintings.
Popular graffiti artis Banksy has done a series of 'altered' oil paintings, some have gas masks painted over ladies' faces.

Also, there's an artist called Modigliani who was influenced by African art and culture, including masks. This influence can be seen in his portraits.

I hope this helps.

Picasso uses the influence of African tribal masks in his iconic work Les Demoiselle D'avignon. From memery one of the women appears to have her face constructed in the style of the mask.
