Have you looked at the volume setting in the control panel?
Question Author
It's because some Youtube posters don't set their volume loud enough
Question Author
Most of them are OK
Lynn you will need to give us some idea of your system and your efforts up to now.
I think it's sorted Togo.
Wearing headphones can help in that situation.
Want more volume ?

Question Author
No, it's not 'sorted.' My 'system' is a HP Windows 7 desk computer and the fingle fangle (whatever it's called) is Google Chrome. The speakers are 3" Sony and the volume is turned all of the way up on the speaker knob, on the mouse-controlled volume control at the bottom right of the screen, and all of the way up on the Youtube volume control found on the bottom left of the Youtube screen
If I turned all those volume settings to maximum on my system it would be very loud.

Can you give us an idea of a YouTube video which causes the problem?

However, bigger speakers are usually better.
More efficient speakers, or an amplifier ?

Depends which Youtube clip you were listening to, Aquariel. I've never posted on Youtube before - I'm not a computer expert - though I believe that the volume that you hear is down to the volume set by the Youtube poster.

Is this Youtube clip 'very loud' on your system? I can hear her, if I turn the volume right up, but not if I'm at the other end of the kitchen. Other Youtube clips do not pose this problem. Enjoy the clip

Pretty loud on my I pad at 3 out of 10.
Are the speakers of the passive type.?.....Not mains powered.

If the answer to my question is Yes, then you need to get powered speakers.

Hans.
I see what you mean, Lynn_M - that video isn't as loud as some on YouTube. I guess that YouTube user has recorded at a lower volume level (or not have a good microphone), but I can still hear it easily when nowhere near full volume on my speakers.

I use these speakers, which I would recommend.

I've just had another thought, which may or may not help you. If you go into the audio volume, bottom right, and then click on Mixer - you will then get some more volume settings. For YouTube, the ones for Adobe Flash Player/Chrome should also be set to 100% if not already.
