Now, I've always thought black helmet visors are illegal for road use but heard a whisper that this law has been changed due to a biker friendly transport minister. A quick search on google proved fruitless, anybody else heard of a change in policy??

Hi Sharky,

Black visors are still illegal, but, and this is hardly believable but true, as Motor cycle news reported a few weeks ago.

The police throughout the UK have decided not to uphold this law if the rider is not using one when it is dark or conditions are murky !

They will also not prosecute for small number plates if the numbers can be read from the distance stipulated for the driving test.
arent they nice people, our lovely traffic police
Hi
Link below for the MCN article. Been something of a debate for long time drawing comparisons to car drivers with tinted windows and or wearing sunglasses etc. Will need to check up but pretty sure that one helmet manufacturer at least has designed lid with a built in flip visor/shade and since it is easily "removeable" as such it is legal.

Further to above - the lid I was talking about is the Caberg V2, (although there are probably others doing it too)
When chatting about it tonight found out my mates Mrs just got one and delighted with it.
Best of both worlds. Clear main visor and inner dark one.

Hi All,

Thanks for the great answers and sorry for the delayed response, just got back from me hols.

Laws eh? Funny old situation but happy that the neccessary parties are listening to the riding public and reacting with a bit of common sense for once.

Portreekid, my mate's got the caberg V2 and absolutely loves it although it can get a tad noisy at speed, fine with earplugs tho'.

Thanks again.

Don't believe anything MCN tells you. MCN is always making false claims so don't read it.

But yes, tinted visors are very much illegal. Stick to the clear ones.
I've been pulled over on numerous occasions on my motorbike. I have a the darkest visor you can get and none of the coppers have mentioned it. This may be due to the fact that they are always behind me when they pull me over. Getting away with having a dark visor has not however stopped the arse holes from stinging me with points and hefty fines for other "infringements".
