it's been mentioned on QI a couple of times that when you see the word YE in old signs that word is not said as 'ye' but is pronounced as 'the' (the same as the present day definite article) - the Y was close to the symbol for an eth and was used for it in signs and printing

Not surprised, there were some over-convoluted wordplays for a daily cryptic here. If I have got this one right:

Reading = R (one of the 3 R's)

If you put that down at some point instead you can get FORTY which is 2 X 20 - SCORE TWICE.

Ouch!
