If there's only you in the house, then I struggle to see why you'd need anything like the download speeds that you're getting.

A house with several teenagers, plus Mum & Dad, all playing online video games at once, while simultaneously all watching different streamed movies might well require such speeds but I very much doubt that you do. (i.e. you're paying for something that you'll never actually use).

I've got a Now TV box, which I use to stream TV programs. I'll probably also be streaming internet radio programs at the same time via my web browser ('cos I tend to just turn the radio sound down to watch TV, rather than actually stopping the stream). I'll probably also be posting on here and downloading files and images, etc at the same time. My 10Mbps connection has no problem at all coping with all of that. If I switched to a faster service I wouldn't see any difference; the only thing that would actually be faster for me would be the speed at which my bank account was drained!

So, as I see it, you most definitely DON'T need to be looking for a service that's as fast as Virgin are giving you. ANY fibre-optic service will be just as good for you, even if you're only offered, say, 20Mbps.
Question them about that box. You don't get charged for the modem/router whatever you want to call it. I suspect they are charging you for a tv box you don't have.
