Tonic water.... sans gin of course!
Tonic water contains quinine. I always drink lots of it before I run marathons etc.
I used to use Crampex tablets - brilliant - but it appears they are no longer available from the chemist, although there are some on Amazon for £199.99 a box!

Someone told me that drinking tonic water helps.
Have you recently started to take statins ? When I began using them I experienced cramps for the first time in my life.

Bananas or other potassium-rich foods.
What I'm going to suggest is utterly insane, I know, so don't bother to tell me. I'm also fully aware of what a placebo is. However, when I first heard of this "cure" for night-time leg-cramps, I laughed out loud but nevertheless gave it a go. It worked.
When you have two or three bars of soap which have been reduced to very thin slivers over time, place them at knee level under your bedsheet. You won't feel them and...who knows? Maybe it'll work for you, too, and who cares what the explanation might be?
cramps may be caused by lack of salt - tis also said a milky drink at bedtimes helps.
Quizmonster - that's utter rub...

O sorry , you said not to tell you :-)
I have a bottle of water by the bed and if I ever wake with cramp I drink some. Relief is immediate. Now I need to find my started pack of Crampex so I can sell them!
Seriously though , her indoors has them from time to time and when she does she is literally in tears - yes i mean crying .

She started on Quinine some months back , which appears to be working , cos i am not aware that she has had any recently
Stretch the muscle as much as you can (and swear a lot). Rubbing/holding it also seems to help ease the pain.
If it is in your calf (which seems to be the most usual) stretch the muscles by pulling your toes as far as you can towards your knee.
Checked with my doctor about the tonic water when he suggested quinine tablets and he agreed that the tonic water might help. It did.
bananas (one of the reason tennis players munch them), quinine tablets, tonic water (which has quinine). My GP says take a multivitamin tablet too.
incidentally if you mean relieving the pain, a regular painkiller will help. Plus stretch out the muscles as others have suggested. Quinine is more to stop the cramps happening in the first place - as they tend to recur over a few days, take them each night for a while if you've had an attack.
