in buildings, trains, buses, stadiums, theatres, houses, park benches... everything!

there were 271,629 in 2001 ,according to the census.

not sure about 2005 it could be more or it could be less.

i doubt its the same though.

hope this helps.

That is a LOT of chair sharing mindbullets!  And doesn't even take account of Chelsea, Spurs, Wimbeldon, QPR, Arsenal, Albert Hall etc.

My guess - several million.  And you'll never find out the true answer.

PS - I'm not too stupid to spot a TIC answer.  I hope that applies to other people too! :-p

mindbullets, thanks to the obesity epidemic, the number has actually decreased, as chairs (in churches, cinemas etc) have had to be made bigger while fitting in the same space. The current answer is of course 42.

mews64, I don't think you're going to get a much closer answer than that. You might be able to hazard a guess by counting the number of buttocks and multiplying by, say, 2, but who knows?

I find that I see alot of people in London either standing or walking around.  I think there must be a chair shortage in London, it's complete chaos.

I have spent 10 years counting seats in London the trouble is I get asked where the nearest seat is and loose count!

I am sure that there are about 10 times as many chairs as people, I think this probably means that there is about 100 million chairs, I wonder if all the chairs have been sat on, and which is the most popular chair in London
acw what does "TIC" mean?
Tongue in cheek,  Someone threw it at me today in a patronising way and I wanted to test out that I'm not the only person who thought it stood for "Tourist Information Centre" or half of Tic-Tac sweets!  So TCL - thank you for being confused! :-D
74 MPs in the House of Commons
25 AMs in the Greater London Assembly
1861 councillors in the 32 London Boroughs
Can we have three chairs for this question?
mews64, whatever number you reach could you deduct 1 as i have plans on nicking one chair from a london park for my back garden.
acw  I thought it might stand for "This Is Cr*p"
