16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Despite the jocular ribbing we give the country, France is a very popular holiday destination for many of us in the UK. Its closeness makes it an ideal place for a short trip but it is juts foreign enough to feel like we have really been away.

There are many ways to get across the Channel you can fly, drive or take a boat. Often the choice of mode of travel is dependent on other factors such as price or journey duration. However, there is now a new option for those wishing to fly to France.

Air France is running the Nantes service in co-operation with CityJet and VLM Airlines. The flights leave from London City Airport which is conveniently sited in East London and is easily accessible by train, bus or car.

The 100-minute flights will be operated by CityJet's Fokker 50 aircrafts, offering a choice of Business and Economy Class services. Economy Class passengers will be served complimentary light meals on board all flights, along with coffee and tea and a choice of alcoholic beverages. Business Class passengers will benefit from enhanced meals, newspapers, fully flexible tickets and increased baggage allowance. The services go twice-daily in the week and once per 24 hours at the weekend.

Managing Director of the London City network for CityJet and VLM Airlines says: "Our award-winning service is well known by travellers using London City Airport and we're pleased to be offering them greater choice with the start of this new route."

"The flights have been deliberately timed to enable passengers to undertake a day's business or leisure in either city and will also make Nantes the perfect destination for a weekend break," commented a spokesman from the Pays De La Loire, where Nantes is situated.

The city was recently voted the "best place to live" in the Gallic country in a national poll and is a "vibrant metropolis". It is "perfect" for a summer weekend break.
