Small Friendly Hotels to the South of San Francisco?

Hi - we're heading south with our hire car after landing at San Francisco airport. We'll be very tired after the long flight and didn't want to drive too far for our first night. We want to avoid airport hotels though. Can anyone recommend any small friendly reasonably priced places to stay up to an hour's drive away that are south of the airport. After that we're heading down the coastal road to Monterey. But it's too long a drive after a long flight.

So any hotels/motels/b&b recommendations for our first night and then any recommendations for the same further down the coastal road.

Hi, many thanks for your response, but if you check the original date of the post is was August 2010. We went in September 2010. We had a great time and would love to go back.
