Hi, I'm thinking of flying to Bangkok from london in the summer and am tempted to turn up without a booking and asking for a standby. Can anybody offer any advice, tips, any chances of success at using this option rather than booking ahead?

I would say that you have no or little chance if you intend to just turn up. BKK is enroute to Australia and the majority of the time these flights are fully booked.

I would suggest trawling around the Internet for options. You are unlikely to get very far just turning up and attempting to go standby. You would also probably get a better deal going via an agent of some type.

I did know of such an agency, I think it was 'Student flights', or something along that line, that offered very cheap flights which probably meant flying with an unfamiliar airline and perhaps changing flights at an en-route airport. I wouldn't advise 'stand-by flying', there is always a long, agonising wait at your departure airports in front of all the scheduled passengers as they check in but never a gurantee of a seat.
