One Way Cheaper Flights

I recently saw an item on the TV which said that it is now possible to book a long haul flight as 2 one-way tickets, purchasing your return flight from your destination country and thus saving money because of the exchange rate.  I have tried to do this online but so far it has cost me double, instead of saving me money, as most companies charge more for a one way fare.  Can anyone advise me on this?

Normally, airlines give a big discount on the return leg  (same as most transport) as they lock you into their service both ways.  It is only with the multiple stop round the world tickets that it is worth getting a single and buying the rest of the ticket elsewhere (eg Thailand or Indonesia).  There are issues with buying a single to anywhere (the airline might try to refuse to let you board, but you can sign a waiver saying it is your cost if you are refused admission)
