Accommodation in Split Croatia

My husband and I (late fifties) are planning a holiday in Split in September. We are quite sociable but like to do our own thing so think an apartment rather that a hotel would be best for us. We like a bit of comfort but don't want to pay over the odds. Any suggestions for accommodation near the main attractions.
