I disagree.

Sorrry about that. I wondered if anyone had travelled from Christchurch to Te Anau
on New Zealand's South Island? I would like to know where to stop overnight. We don't want to go to Queenstown, as we are going there after Te Anau. Many thanks,.
That doesn't surprise me.
there are motels at Timaru, Oamaru and Dunedin (hotels too, I think). Inland places like Wedderburn and Lumsden have accommodation. I haven't stayed at any of them, though, so can't say if they're any good. (They are usually okay three-star places, and motels often have kitchens in the rooms.)

This might have some advice:

Thank you very much jno - very helpful.
if you're travelling at school holiday time (especiall December-February) you might want to book ahead occasionally; ther est of the year you should be ok. NZers drive around quite a bit so there's usually accommodation in most medium-sized centres.

Have a look at this page too
