Best way is Kings Cross to Paddington on the tube then Heathrow Express from Paddington - Takes 15 minutes and they run every 15 minutes
Heathrow Express is quickest but expensive, about £16 one way I think. You may want to balance expense against speed and convenience.
Assuming T5 (which is the furthest), emeritus' way takes about 40 mins and costs £19. Piccadilly line all the way is 1hr 2 mins and costs £4.30. Your choice.
if you're travelling at a weekend you need to access jno's link to the tfl journey planner as over the next few weeks there are closures on the piccadilly line and circle/metropolitan lines (though not both on any given weekend), which may affect either of the suggested routes above.

in the past, closure of the piccadilly line has resulted in oyster cards being valid on the heathrow express.
